About The Event
The sixth Royston Pink Ribbon Run/Walk will take place on Sunday June 26th. Like previous years we have already booked the most beautiful sunshine. We are hoping for a record number of entries of both runners and walkers who joined together to go around the course on Royston Heath. A distance of 5 km or 3 miles the run/walk was for men, women and children to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust .
Organisers hope that they can build on success of the last few years, in total £107, 393.11 was raised for Cancer Research UK in the last three years. The 2009 event raised £22,00 for Marie Curie and every penny raised is donated to charity. The cost of the event is met by sponsors and the volunteers give their time freely. We are now committed to rasing money for Teenage Cancer Trust for the next three years, or £100K whichever comes first!
Entry costs £12 (Concessions: OAP/Disabled £10 and under 18 £6) and entrants are invited to run or walk the 3 miles and ask friends and family to sponsor them. Entry forms will be available in early April, both on-line and also at Royston Library, Sports Kit and many other shops in Royston. You will be sent a race pack from May onwards with sponsor form, race number and t-shirt. At the end of the race each person who completes the course will be presented with a medal.
The run/walk is a sponsored event and forms are sent out together with the bags and race numbers. These will be available to everyone in early May. Every person who raises over £250 will be invited to a special presentation evening in September when they will receive a certificate and a special gift to mark their achievements. They will also be part of the cheque presentation to Teenage Cancer Trust.
The race is organised by a very small committe of Laura Woodcock, Christine Brown, Mandy Jinkerson, Guy and Lisa Thompson, Andrea Cook, Wendy Findlay, Kathryn Norman and Michaela Goodings. Please be aware we are all volunteers and do our best to make the day a success all offers of help are very gratefully received and if you want to help by stewarding, selling raffle tickets, helping to hand out water or any of the many hundreds of jobs that need doing, then please get in touch.
Guy Thompson, a member of the committee said
"We are hoping this year to have 1000 men, women and children join in the fun of walking or running the 5 kms and if you have always wanted to try running this is a great distance to start with.
Royston Runners organise Absolute beginner training sessions at Royston Heath at 6.30 pm on a Tuesday evening – so there is no excuse for anybody who would like to run the race not to get started."
Many women will prefer to walk and they too are welcome on the day – why not consider walking? Mandy Jinkerson commented that “the Pink Ribbon Walk is for everyone no matter what their level of fitness, why not come and walk with me, I am recovering from knee surgery so am very aware that this year I can't run the race but to be able to walk the distance is a huge challenge for me, so do come and join me in walking....there are lots of us this is not a race but a run or a walk for everyone".
The organisers are appealing to local businesses to consider entering teams and for women of all ages to come forward and join in the fun of the Pink Ribbon Run/Walk for Teenage Cancer Trust.
All competitors who complete the run/walk will receive a pink t-shirt and medal. There will also be prizes for the best pink fancy dress on the day and the most successful fundraiser. New this year is a competition for the best decorated buggy and this has been sponsored by Bumpkins Day Care Nursery.
The race has been sponsored and supported by WKH Chartered Accountants, Johnson Matthey, Tesco, Royston Rotary,TTP Group, Bumpkins Day Care Nursery, Internet Geeks, The Complementary Health Centre Royston, Stationery Cupboard, Woodenhouse Design & Media, Royston Veterinary Centre, Saffron Building Society, Meridian School, aba consulting, Royston Crow, Palazzo, Freman College, Hush and The Heath Sports Club and many other local companies for which we are very grateful.
